Some words from my dear host and curator Snežana Sina Mocović.
The Community Space Krug was very pleased to present “NASTAJANJE NE•STAJANJA”, a solo exhibition by local guest artist Milica Macanović. The show´s title in Serbian already invites us to address the ambiguity strongly prevailing in her photographs: two experimental self-portraits, complemented by a number of micro images of vague body and skin parts, juxtaposing the analogue and the digital. On the one hand, it poses the question of how phenomena in front of us disappear through ideological entanglements. On the other, it suggests how they emerge through consistency, continuousness and scrutiny as the pivotal part of a critical thinking framework. The two central self-portraits, blurry and dramatic, seem to burst and shudder at any attempt of appropriation as if saying: “What you associate with it is what it isn´t.” They decisively keep their aura of mystery only to echo off into an otherwordly vibration. The micro images of body and skin parts scattered around them are reminiscent of abstract landscapes, at first glance unspecified; however, if zoomed in, the realization that there is nothing but soft matter behind the skin haunted by the life itself becomes disturbingly provocative. Ultimately, the viewers may be taken aback by their own deautomatized perception. The theme that permeates these artworks is the metamorphosis of consciousness linked to the artistic aspiration to initiate self-awareness and collective awareness. “NASTAJANJE NE•STAJANJA” may just lead to a starting point of disintegrating obsolete ways of perception and definition. Still, it is nevertheless a discernable point, stimulating our openness and willingness to discard infused habits and preconceived notions of the agonizing world we live in.
